I’m so glad to know that you checked. I’m taking this as a signal boost reminder to everyone: Republicans can’t win elections with their philosophy and governing, so they suppress and deny voters our right to vote. They target Democratic voters, which means they get the added bonus of doing a racism, a bigotry, and a silencing of the youth vote.
So check your voter registration with your country registrar, to ensure you haven’t been purged. It will only take a couple of minutes, and it could quite literally be the difference between saving our country from its plunge into Trumpist fascism, and watching America turn into the Handmaid’s Tale.
The Supreme Court just issues a ruling allowing Ohio and other states to purge voters from their election registration rolls due to their failure to cast a ballot in previous elections.
This is a major victory for the Trump administration and the GOP, and a direct consequence of the Supreme Court being stacked with more conservative judges (the votes were 5-4). This is also a huge part of what Trump/the GOP were counting on to save them in the 2018 midterm elections, which is where Democrats have been hoping to take back a majority in the House, giving them more power to combat Trump’s abuses of power and Republican legislation.
What this means is YOU CAN NOT ASSUME THAT YOU ARE REGISTERED for the 2018 elections, just because you SHOULD be. Thanks to this decision, red states can purge voters’ registration based on their not having cast a ballot in even just previous federal elections, NOT just the national Presidential elections. Effectively, if you haven’t voted in previous senate races or for congressional representatives in the past few years, that’s all they need now to say you’re no longer registered and need to register again.
They’re deliberately counting on people assuming they’re still registered and so not checking until after registration deadlines have passed, or showing up to vote this November and only then finding out they’re no longer registered, when its too late to do a damn thing about it.
And this is absolutely targeted at marginalized communities, low income voters, disabled voters, and basically anyone who simply can’t always AFFORD to keep on top of every federal election and show up to vote in every senate race, etc. Which not so coincidentally happen to be all the communities and voters who have the most to gain from Democratic victories in the 2018 midterms and are the least likely to cast votes for GOP candidates at this point.
This was absolutely a calculated effort aimed specifically at keeping the GOP in power with a majority control of the government come November, and unfortunately, it has a DAMN good chance of accomplishing just that if it goes by unacknowledged. I’m not looking to alarm or panic anyone, simply to say:
If you are a registered voter in a red state at this point, please please please do not take your registered status as assumed. Check on your registration status, look up all relevant voter registration deadlines for your state and district, CIRCLE THAT SHIT ON YOUR CALENDAR, and check your registration status AGAIN right before those deadlines pass, so you can be sure of it before its too late to do anything about it til the next voting cycle.
Six months ago Mamoudou Gassama, 22, was back in his home country of Mali, dreaming of following in the footsteps of many of his countrymen to build a new life in Paris. Now, the undocumented immigrant is being hailed as a hero, and will today meet the President amid calls for him to receive his papers and be allowed to officially settle in France.
It all started on Saturday afternoon, as Mamoudou was walking home from the famous Gare du Nord railway station. He came across a panicked crowd of people, looking on with terror as a 4-year-old boy was dangling precariously from a balcony, four storeys up. Without a thought for his personal safety, Mamoudou leapt into action and began to climb the building with incredible ease, something which has earned him the nickname ‘spiderman.’
Speaking to Le Parisien, Mamoudou explained what was going through his mind during his daring rescue. “I did not think of the floors, I did not think of the risk,” he said. “I did it because it’s a child. I really like children.”
In addition to a personal ‘merci’ from President Macron, Mamoudou also received congratulations from the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, who posted on Twitter: “Congratulations to Mamoudou Gassama for his brave act that helped save a child’s life last night. I had the pleasure to talk with him today by phone, to thank him warmly.”
It seems like Mamoudou’s selfless act has endeared him to the French nation, and will go a long way toward helping him settle in the country. “He explained to me that he arrived from Mali a few months ago while dreaming of building his life here,” Hidalgo also explained. “I replied that his heroic gesture is an example for all citizens and that the City of Paris will obviously be keen to support him in his efforts to settle in France.”

Daryl Davis is a professional musician by trade, touring all over the states performing blues. However, music is not his only passion. Davis has spent over 30 years talking to and befriending the members of the Ku Klux Klan. One might ask why would a black man do that and the reason is quite simple — Davis is trying to understand the reasoning behind racism and end it not by opposing, but by listening and communicating.
His quest began when he was only 10 years old, at a scout parade, when a group of white people started throwing bottles and rocks at the only black boy in scouts group. That was the first time Davis encountered such a violent reaction and when his parents explained to him it was because of his skin color, Daryl only had one question — why? “It was inconceivable to me that someone who had never laid eyes on me, never spoken to me, knew absolutely nothing about me would want to inflict pain upon me for no other reason than the color of my skin” he explained. “How can you hate me when you don’t even know me?” was the question that Davis kept in his mind through the years as he studied various books on racism. But books couldn’t provide the answer, so when he grew up he decided to go and ask the people of the Ku Klux Klan.
Through 30 years Davis managed to talk 200 people to leave the KKK, as they would listen to his performances and talk to him often. One of them was Roger Kelly who was the Grand Dragon of the KKK in Maryland. Kelly became close friends with Davis, even inviting him to become his daughter’s godfather. Upon leaving the clan, Roger Kelly handed his robe to Davis. He keeps the robes as trophies and proofs that racism can be beaten. With over 3 decades of experiences, Davis has written a book “Klan-destine Relationships” as well as was the focus of “Accidental Courtesy” documentary.
Daryl Davis is a hero who managed to strip people of ignorance and ill intent with compassion and understanding, despite facing prejudice and hate just because of his skin color.
